Licensing Manager - How To Activate Report Runner Products (and See and Manage All Activations)

With the Licensing Manager, you can activate, deactivate, and see ALL of your licensing and activated machines (no more need to contact us to find out how many activations are left or who has what installed).

You are in control of all of it (if you have licensing that requires activation and contacts our licensing server).

Should you have any issues activating a machine or something isn't working correctly, please see the error/debugging notes at the bottom of this KB article.

Basic Licensing Steps:

  1. Copy/Save As "base" reportrunner.key file from licensing email to machine into the root "Jeff-Net" data folder (c:\users\public\documents\jeff-net) -- just ONCE, not yearly; Note, you should only use this "base" key file on new machines -- do not copy a reportrunner.key from another machine -- once a reportrunner.key file is placed on a machine, it stores SPECIFIC settings for that machine
  2. Start Report Runner
  3. Open the Licensing Manager
  4. Click ACTIVATE to turn "on" a product on machine

Note: Do not try to open/edit reportrunner.key file. There is nothing to see. There is nothing to copy/paste from reportrunner.key file either.

Understanding the Licensing Manager Layout:

  • At the top you see YOUR company name and expiration date (and days remaining)
  • The left side shows the various Report Runner products (along with indicators for "Activated", total activations available, total activations remaining)
  • The middle location has Activate, Deactivate, and Add buttons (previously when you set the "key" file, the activation was automatic -- now you must specifically ACTIVATE a product on a machine)
  • The right side shows add-ons or variations towards the top, the minimum Report Runner version supported (can change in the future and it allows us to "force" critical updates), account ID, and lastly the licensing server information (so you can white-list or safe-list the URL and IP address -- our software must be able to check in with the licensing server at any time) and a proxy server button to allow additional configurations
  • Lastly, at the bottom, from left to right is an Emergency License button (allows a temp activation if your license expires -- can only be used once), a Refresh License button (forces a connection to our licensing server to check in and refresh any changes), and a Show Licenses button to see ALL of your license activations within your company (you can also DEACTIVATE from there, too)

Understanding the Show All License Activations Layout:

  • At the top are quick filters to view the data differently (by default all machines, products, and activations are shown)
  • In the middle is list of machines, products, and activation date and time
  • Near the bottom center it shows your current machine ID
  • At the bottom, you have a DEACTIVATE button (just select the machine and product, and you can deactivate and free up a license activation to use elsewhere), two Export buttons (one to export a quick text list of the current filtered view, and one to export into a pipe delimited file so you can write your own report against the data)

Licensing Server Information:

The IP address and web call URL of the licensing server is displayed in the Licensing Manager interface (port 443). The URL may change in the future (v1, v2, v3, etc), but the IP address should not. This is an "elastic" IP hosted with AWS. It will be used for the licensing server "forever".

Test the connection to https://v2.knownapi.com (full URL is different than the one displayed - click for live URL). The IP address is 52.45.156.188. The URL and IP address should be safe/white-listed by your security software and/or firewall. Just because you are able to connect via your web browser to the licensing server does NOT mean the application is guaranteed to connect. Your browser could be configured to allow internet traffic, and our application may not be (see "debugging" topic below). By clicking the URL, we're trying to demonstrate our licensing server is THERE and RESPONDING.

Note: Do NOT try to PING our IP address. For security reasons, we do not respond to pings to this server (that's why we give you an API call to test above).

Configure Server Proxy (Button Above In Licensing Server Information):

If your company requires a proxy server to reach our licensing server, you may configure it here.

Machine Appears to be Activated, but You're Still Getting a Licensing Error?

Your machine may have had a hardware change. With our proprietary licensing engine, this will break your license/activation. When this happens, click on Show All License Activations, find your machine listed, click on/select it, and click DEACTIVATE. This will free up the previously activated license, and you can now exit and try to re-ACTIVATE your machine.

Do You Need to (Re)Generate Your Company License Key (reportrunner.key)? Lost Your Original License Key?

You can now get your company license key (reportrunner.key) regenerated and emailed to you without having to contact us/Support. Just use the form below. As long as you maintain only one company record with us, your license key can be regenerated based on your email domain. For example if you work for "Big Company Inc" and your email address is joe@bigcompanyinc.com (and that's the email domain we've used to interact with ANYONE at your company previously), all you have to do is enter your email address in the form below, and it will generate and email you your key immediately.
